Extra Space Storage recently completed an upgrade for a self storage property in Chicago, IL at 601 W Harrison St.

Located in a downtown urban area of Chicago, the property at 601 W Harrison St was due for updates to meet current city ordinances. The project was divided into two main components: interior structural updates and exterior repairs and cladding. Peter McDaniel was the Program Manager and led the effort with support from Deal Captain Mackay Reid and Design Lead Derek Sneddon.

“I’m proud of the overall look of the property now,” said McDaniel. “It’s a night and day difference from what it was.”

The design team was intentional about complementing the darker cladding details that already existed on the building, which resulted in a fresh, urban feel suitable for its location. These unique touches make the property stand out among other Extra Space Storage facilities.

With site upgrades and redesigns, it’s often the case that the facility must remain open and accessible to customers. “One of the most challenging parts of the project was completing the large scope of structural concrete repairs along the vehicle driving aisles inside the facility,” McDaniel explained.

The project team worked with store leaders and the Extra Space Storage Operations team to mitigate customer impact by creating a phased approach for partial lane closures. This allowed continuous customer access for almost the entire duration of construction. Thanks to the collaborative effort, full lane closures were only required on a few weekends.

In addition to interior repairs and exterior design, the construction team installed rooftop solar panels. This is part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability focused on long-term innovations to bring our company and the world a better tomorrow.
