Extra Space Storage Adds Climate-Controlled Units to Stanton, CA Storage Facility

At the end of 2019, Extra Space Storage completed a self storage expansion project that added 261 units to a facility located at 10741 Dale Ave in Stanton, CA. According to Program Manager Mark Glasmire, the expansion was a major upgrade for the facility. The team was able to build a modern climate-controlled facility next to an older and more common first-generation style, single-story building.

This self storage expansion came with some challenges. For one, the Stanton storage facility was part of an acquisition that included multiple properties situated along railroad tracks, all of which had long, narrow sites. What this meant was that the new building would have to be built nearly 1,700 feet away (or about 1/3 of a mile) from the main office and entrance, and it would require the team to install additional data services so that the gate access and security systems would work across the site.

Because the new building needed to be synced up with the existing facility’s systems—and due to changes with the local electrical provider—the team needed to reroute the electrical feed at the existing site. This, unfortunately, added costs and construction delays the Extra Space Storage team hadn’t anticipated.

“Also, we had some issues regarding the performance of some of our outside consultants,” said Glasmire. “Identifying things like the need to back-feed the electric earlier in the process would have made the project move quicker. Once we corrected that, the project went smoothly.”

Though there were a few snags along the way, Glasmire and the team were able to complete the expansion project, adding a number of climate-controlled units to the facility and refreshing the overall property look. Thanks to District Vice President Tony Chung, District Manager Brian Kim, the Extra Space Storage Operations team, and the local managers, the Dale Ave expansion was a success!
