At Extra Space Storage, we believe our greatest asset is our employees. From the people who work in our National Sales Center to the managers operating our self storage facilities across the nation, the team behind Extra Space Storage is what makes our company better every single day.
Each quarter, we give out the EXTRAordinary Employee of the Quarter award. These aren’t given to people who just do their jobs. They’re awarded to those who go above and beyond in demonstrating our core values, and the nominations are submitted anonymously by other employees, team leaders, or entire departments.
Below are the EXTRAordinary winners from Q2 2022, featuring the nomination statements from their peers!
Erin Schlund – District Manager
“Erin continues to excel in the District Manager role. She is always willing to address any concerns and genuinely wants the entire team to succeed. Whenever there are extra challenges, Erin is willing to take them on. She is currently supporting two districts and managing them seamlessly. Erin consistently looks for ways to make Extra Space Storage a great place to work. One example is addressing the travel concerns of the team. In this time of high gas prices, she quickly recognized the struggle and continues to work with the team to ease their burden with proper scheduling and commuting. We’re lucky to have Erin on our team.”
Tony Castillo – District Manager
“I am grateful that Tony came up through the ranks and knows the challenges we can sometimes face on-site. Besides having a warm and friendly personality, Tony is more than willing to jump in and help out whenever needed. Every time he has visited my site, or I have had an interaction with him via phone or meetings, his parting words are “What else can I do to help you?” He has cleaned units, helped customers, and pitches in whenever he sees the need. But more importantly, he is very focused on helping team members grow with our company. If you give him any kind of inclination that you would like to learn a new skill or transition to a new role, he will communicate with you and help you brainstorm ideas to get you in a position to advance. Our team regularly shouts out in emails about how excited we are to be able to grow and learn with his leadership abilities. I can’t say enough about how impressed I am with Tony’s willingness to change course in certain situations when given feedback from team members. I am so glad that he listens to and values our opinions. I appreciate that Tony is not just doing his job, but truly cares about us and wants us to succeed as well!”
Ted Glynn – District Manager
“Ted was there for me as I was given a new site two months into my tenure. I reached out to him on multiple occasions, and in each instance, Ted dropped what he was doing to assist. He is selfless, and supportive, and made me feel at ease in a recent stressful situation. Thanks to Ted, the situation was a learning opportunity and allowed me to feel supported. Ted, and actions of this nature are the reason I left my previous employer for Extra Space Storage. There is an exceptional focus on ‘We’ over ‘I,’ and this was a brilliant illustration of that. Tyler Huish – Senior Product Manager, Store Support Center
“Tyler has been at the center of multiple company initiatives. He juggles a lot, including stakeholders and product staff, product engineering relationships, and more, as he works to make sure we are building the right products for the right reasons. Obviously, Tyler can’t build these products by himself and as we celebrate the outcomes of them there are dozens (even hundreds) of people that need to be celebrated and thanked, but Tyler has done a remarkable job ensuring these products provide excellent service and quality to both internal and external users. He’s helping the company grow, and he has a primary focus on increasing internal customer satisfaction, which in turn, will have a positive impact on the tenants at our stores as well.”
Matt Lish – Senior Investments Manager, Store Support Center
“Matt really embodies all of the company goals. Being in proximity to him gives me an appreciation for how hard he works. He is constantly grinding to get loans done for the company and working past 7:00 p.m. seems to be a regular thing for him. I’ve been pulled in to help him once or twice, and it just gives me a glimpse of all of the work that he has put into everything. I also hear him on the phone all day talking to Extra Space Storage partners and always patiently walking them through the loan process. On top of everything he does, he is a teammate that always takes time to get to know people and gets the team to laugh. Matt is an absolute asset to our company.”
Ilona Donnell – Division Learning Manager
“Since the beginning of the year, Ilona has been a great partner for both our Learning and Development team and in supporting our operational goals. First, in support of her division, she worked to drive the performance of new hires in meeting company goals. She took an active role to discuss and coach District Team Leads in areas we had opportunities to improve. Additionally, Ilona took on extra work in creating a facilitator’s guide and presentation, for all of the District Vice Presidents to deliver at their division meetings. She also spent time training two new Division Learning Managers and had regular mentorship meetings with three of her other peers. And she was used as a sounding board to look over some of the District Meeting content that was delivered to our stores. Last but certainly not least, she’s tackled these challenges and produced amazing results with an amazing attitude. Her positivity, friendliness, and willingness to help anyone and everyone is unapparelled. We are so lucky to have Ilona on our team!”
Rashanelle Bateman – Inbound Sales Representative, National Solutions Center
“Rashanelle (Rasha) has been a tremendous team player this last quarter. Rasha stepped up to join the National Solutions Center (NSC) mentor program at the beginning of the year, and during the end of the first and second quarters, she stepped up to help with new hire training. Rasha learned the process and stepped in on several occasions to cover for our trainers. Rasha is trustworthy and has done a phenomenal job assisting the Learning and Development team. Additionally, Rasha is always willing to step in and help her team and the larger group. Rasha’s team lead cited that she transitioned from a field position to the NSC without missing a beat and sets a great example in her daily interactions on providing excellent service to our customers and fellow team members. On several occasions, Rasha has taken calls in front of many people, including new hires, investors, and other leadership members; every call is consistently navigated well, and customers leave with a smile. Rasha is a great role model and has gone above and beyond this last quarter! One of our agents also called out Rasha’s involvement during new hire training and cited that Rasha was such a huge help. ‘Rasha made training professional but enjoyable. She made me eager to learn and gave me all the tools needed to succeed at Extra Space. She is a prime example of our culture and amplifies the company’s core values. I am so blessed to have her as a mentor during my new hire training, and I know she will do amazing things for the company!’”
