At Extra Space Storage, we believe our greatest asset is our employees. From the people who work in our National Sales Center to the managers operating our self storage facilities across the nation, the team behind Extra Space Storage is what makes our company better every single day.
Each quarter, we give out the EXTRAordinary Employee of the Quarter award. These aren’t given to people who just do their jobs. They’re awarded to those who go above and beyond in demonstrating our core values, and the nominations are submitted anonymously by other employees, team leaders, or entire departments.
Below are the EXTRAordinary winners from Q4 2018 featuring the nomination statements from their peers!
Alan Patterson – Senior Director of Tax, Store Support Center
“Alan’s department produces hundreds of tax returns every year for Extra Space Storage and all of its many partners. This is a ton of work under normal circumstances. However, he has had two tax managers leave to job offers that they couldn’t refuse, and Alan has had to pick up an enormous amount of the load personally while he is hiring to fill the positions and to train new managers. This has all taken place during a very busy time of the year, and Alan has been logging very long hours (being here until midnight is not unusual) to meet deadlines and ensure we are compliant with the IRS. What makes it more admirable is he never complains, and he still is very responsive to other requests from other departments that need his help on projects despite his very large workload. He is a great example of amazing internal customer service!”
Brian Leavitt – Facility Services Manager, East Coast
“Over the last quarter, Brian has supported 9652, 9654, and 9655 during the transition between FSMs in the Pontillo division. Brian has made this transition seamless. He is always available for phone calls, incredibly responsive to emails and reviews, and responds to OBR requests daily. Brian’s can-do attitude has enabled us to move forward on several large critical projects (waterproofing @ 8153, HVAC replacement at 483, and multiple gate replacement due to accidents). Brian’s partnership has been critical in dealing with vendors and reducing off-line units. Brian truly lives our Extra Space Storage values each day and treats his DMs like business partners.”
Brian Whipple – Property Accountant, Store Support Center
“Brian was nominated for his work with Breeze in Accounting. Brian developed some stored procedures to make the daily reconciliation of Breeze postings more efficient and timely. IT took the work Brian created and implemented the procedures directly into the Breeze testing. This has saved the PAs with Breeze sites hours per week in time testing Breeze.”
Diane Domis – District Manager, Pontillo Division
“Diane truly exemplified our values throughout 2018 and finished strong in Q4. She has long been the only DM in Charleston, SC. When she started, Charleston was just a small part of her district. She ended Q4 managing 21 stores in Charleston alone. Nine of her stores are third-party managed representing six different partnership groups. Diane onboarded five of these third-party stores in 2018. Charleston is a market that experienced a significant amount of new development in 2018. Many of her stores faced new competition, but through it all, she continued to strive for excellence among her existing stores and her new store openings. She modeled teamwork among her store teams and her new Division peers. Diane is passionate about her people and her stores. She exemplifies integrity and expects the same from those around her.”
Geoff Hayth – District Manager, Peoples Division
“Store 1795 in Austin, TX had over $100,000 in pest claims through the first three quarters of 2018. Geoff Hayth worked diligently with the Store Management team, Facilities, Procurement, Risk, and our Pest Vendor to devise a plan to mitigate this long-standing risk (huge thanks to all). His efforts included multiple trips to the store and working hand-in-hand with the store management team to devise a plan, track progress, and inspire success. At the 2018 rate of loss, Q4 could have incurred at least another $25,000 in pest claims. The store had $0 in pest claims in Q4! I am very proud of Geoff Hayth for driving this process at an extremely high level and mitigating loss, which will positively impact our customer experience and ultimately shareholder value! This was an EXTRAordinary effort and result!”
Ryan Field – Software Senior Engineer, Store Support Center
“Ryan Field has played a pivotal role on the Breeze team during the fourth quarter as a member of team Rocket. This development team has dedicated 100% of their time to all these transactions and accounting. As new stores have been added to Breeze, new edge-case transaction scenarios have been introduced, helping us recognize where we need to refine the code. As a master of the accounting codebase of Breeze, Ryan has helped many other developers understand this area of the application, so they too can help harden and stabilize the transaction codebase. Ryan’s days have been filled with writing code, reviewing other developer’s code, meeting with experts in accounting, writing automated tests, lots and lots of math, mentoring, problem-solving, and so much more. You would often find Ryan in the office before you came in in the morning and still here after you were heading home. His dedication to making sure Breeze code is better every day is a great example of how Ryan is working so hard to provide Extra Space Storage an excellent product and service to our customers, both external and internal.”
Sarah Memmott – Sales Floor Supervisor, National Support Center
“Sarah continues to go above and beyond to provide an excellent product and superior service. Sarah has only been in her role as floor supervisor a short time, but in that time, she has made a huge impact to our customers, NSC agents, and the call center as a whole. Her bubbly personality and knowledge of both sales and service procedures and processes makes her invaluable to agents and members of leadership at the NSC. Every day, she goes above and beyond to help agents who have questions and even handles escalated calls from customers, all while having a big smile on her face. She greets everyone by name and is always willing to take on projects and added responsibilities. She leads by example and truly embodies Extra Space Storage’s values.”
