Armando, a dedicated team member since 2016, recently celebrated a significant milestone in his career by being promoted to Bench Facility Service Manager. We sat down with him to discuss his journey at Extra Space, the motivations behind his career choices, and his advice for others looking to advance their careers within the company.
How long have you been with Extra Space, and what roles have you held?
I started my journey with Extra Space in 2016. I say “journey” because I wasn’t sure what my career trajectory would be. After three months of experiencing the culture, teamwork, and personal and professional growth over a short time, I knew I wanted to advance my career here. I started as an Assistant Store Manager and worked my way to a District Team Lead. Growing within the company gave me a sense of fulfillment and gratitude because I could not have done this without the support of my peers and supervisors.
What drove your interest in joining the facilities team?
I worked at my father’s welding and fabrication shop, so my interest started there. I also worked in construction in college for two large home improvement companies in various roles. So, I’ve always had a keen interest in facilities because of those previous jobs. With the direction and support of my District Manager, Dan Smith, we discussed my passion for facilities and made a development plan to apply my experience there.
What advice do you have for someone looking to advance their career at Extra Space?
Pursue your passion with vigor! Extra Space not only supports this approach but encourages it. Engage with your team and supervisor about your career goals, work on your individual development plan, and embrace your curiosity. Remember, we achieve more together, so share your learnings and remain open to new opportunities.
Sr. Director of Facilities Ed Donaghy is Armando’s leader in this new role. He highlighted Armando’s organizational skills and eagerness to learn as key factors in his success. Additionally, Ed emphasized the team’s collaborative spirit, noting that the 33 Facility Service Managers nationwide operate in unison, always ready to support each other with coverage, training, or guidance.
