Extra Space Storage Launches New Employee Development Programs in Q1 2021

​​​​​​​In the first quarter of 2021, the Extra Space Storage Talent Development team launched four new employee development programs to accompany existing leadership and executive development programs.

“We’ve created six formal development programs for high-performing employees who are ready for an intense but rewarding, career-building experience,” said Scott Anderson, Manager of Talent Development at Extra Space Storage’s Salt Lake City headquarters. “Thank you to everyone on the Talent Development team and others at Extra Space Storage that participated in many months of identifying the adjustments needed to provide quality development opportunities for our employees.”

If you’re looking for your next big career move, here’s an inside look at the different development opportunities available for current and future Extra Space Storage employees.

Leadership Development Program

The Leadership Development Program is designed to elevate technical expertise, organizational awareness, soft skills, and scope of influence within Extra Space Storage. This intense program helps prepare high potential managers with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a leader of other leaders. Participants of the program complete online training for leading diverse and inclusive teams, and work with a mentor to create a development plan that implements feedback from a 360-degree assessment. Other responsibilities are catered to each individual and may include travel and networking across the company, extensive job shadowing or applied business projects, and enrollment in the Arbinger Institute’s Outward Mindset course.

Executive Development Program

The Executive Development Program prepares high potential Directors, Senior Directors, and Senior Division Managers to move into Vice President roles or other executive leadership roles. The program focuses on developing executive presence and fine-tuning soft skills, as well as knowledge and influence at Extra Space Storage. Program participants work one-on-one with a mentor from the executive team and meet with all other Extra Space Storage executives throughout the year. Individual development plans in this program are aggressive and require demonstrated ability to take on significant assignments in addition to everyday work. Participants will lead or work on projects that have a high impact on the business. Program curriculum may also include executive coaching and presenting at conferences and trade shows.

Launch X

Launch X is a development program for newly promoted leaders or newly hired leaders new to Extra Space Storage. The program combines Human Resource and Management principles, and soft skills training to set new leaders on the right path from day one. Participants complete this robust leadership course through in-person, online, and self-driven learning. In addition to self-development curricula like time management, communication skills, and the CliftonStrengths assessment, new leaders will also learn about developing people, providing feedback and coaching, managing performance and accountability, recruiting best practices, and much more.

Skill Enhancement Employee Development

The Skill Enhancement Employee Development program targets high potential employees who have expressed interest in growth and ready for an intense career development plan. Participants will work with their leader and the Extra Space Storage Talent Development team to create a customized program specific to their needs. The program may include online skill and development training courses, job shadowing, internal coaching, feedback assessments, and cross-functional projects.

Job Shadowing

The Job Shadow program allows Extra Space Storage employees to gain insight into different functions within the organization through exposure and cross-training. Giving individuals the opportunity to complete a series of day-in-the-life experiences reduces silos, increases collaboration between teams, and promotes diverse career growth. The best part is it’s open to a broad group of employees! Leadership is not a requirement for the program, and the experience can even be conducted virtually. Participants complete pre and post-work and attend a structured schedule of engagements over multiple days.

Master’s Program

The Master’s Program is a targeted plan to give participants exposure and development to their industry outside of Extra Space Storage. It’s designed for high-performing individuals who would benefit from a more balanced perspective of their function and fresh ideas, or project-based workers in need of short development bursts. The curriculum consists of specialized training courses or projects, sponsored networking experiences inside and outside the organization, and may include conference presentations.
