Recently, Extra Space Storage developed and opened a new self storage property in Plantation, FL. Located at 7795 W Sunrise Blvd just east of the W Sunrise Blvd and N University Dr intersection, the facility serves residents of Plantation, Sunrise, Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, and more.
What started as a vacant piece of property originally purchased from a former partner in 2009 became a development project years in the making. Program Manager Mark Glasmire, Design Lead Rob Burns, and their team had to go through an interminable and complicated entitlement process simply to build on the site, as the local jurisdiction had specific demands regarding building architecture and property landscaping.
Among the city’s demands for construction was an emphasis that the new building “not look like storage.” To adhere to the city’s standards, the Extra Space Storage development team was provided instructions for materials to be used, specifically a minimum of five different exterior textures: glass, stucco, natural stone, smooth face CMU, and split face CMU.
The city also had landscaping requirements that dictated the planting of more than 130 trees with an equal amount of plants and shrubs throughout the property. Though these demands were incredibly specific, the Extra Space Storage team was able to incorporate all of the city’s conditions into the self storage facility’s overall design.
After nearly ten years in development, our new Plantation self storage facility opened for operation in June 2019. The building stands four stories tall, has approximately 71,048 net rentable square feet, and offers entirely indoor, climate-controlled storage units for customers.
