Extra Space Storage—a member of the S&P 500—is thrilled to be named among Forbes’ America’s Best Midsize Employers in 2022. This is the fifth consecutive year that the self storage company has been recognized.
Results for the 2022 list of America’s Best Employers were identified in an independent survey taken by approximately 60,000 American employees working for companies with more than 1,000 workers in the United States. In total, 1,000 employers were recognized across 25 different industry sectors. Individuals were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employer to friends and family.
“Every day, we are building a company that will be better and stronger than we found it the day before,” said Extra Space Storage CEO Joe Margolis. “Our approach has led to fantastic historical results, and our future looks bright. We always say that the best days of our company are ahead of us and every year we prove it to be true.”
Extra Space Storage’s portfolio of properties has grown to over 2,000 locations in 41 states in the past year. The company continued to diversify through wholly-owned, joint venture, third-party-managed stores, and other innovative capital investments. But beyond company growth, building a strong culture where employees can improve and grow is a primary focus.
“Extra Space is the best place to work in the self storage industry,” Margolis continued. “We constantly work to evolve and improve our employee experience because we believe that if we have the best people, we will produce the best results.”
An expanding portfolio naturally leads to more opportunities for people to further their careers. In 2021, employee growth soared with 516 Assistant Store Managers promoted to Store Managers, 92 Store Managers promoted to District Team Leads, and 16 District Team Leads advancing to District Managers in Training. At the headquarters in 2021, over 100 new employees were hired, and 102 existing team members were promoted to new roles.
Extra Space Storage has also been recognized for its employee-focus and values-driven culture, and recently for its continued commitment to diversity and inclusion with the announcement of CEO Joe Margolis taking the CEO Diversity and Inclusion Pledge. In 2021, the company significantly expanded its Diversity & Inclusion Committee with the addition of four new Employee Resource Groups that support BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Veterans, and Women in the workplace.
