Whether you’re relocating across the country or just moving to a new home within your current city, there are a lot of everyday logistics to tackle during the moving process. What are some of the most important things you need to take care of while you’re moving? Check out our moving tips below!
Change Your Address
One of the most crucial things to update when moving is your mailing address. You can easily submit a “Change of Address” through the USPS website, which will ensure your mail stops being sent to your old address and gets redirected to your new address. Of course, there are plenty of situations in which you might need a temporary forwarding address because you don’t have an established residence yet. In such cases, you can rent a mailbox, set up a PO Box, or sign up for mail scanning.
Stop & Start Utilities
This sounds obvious, but there are people who forget to stop and start utilities when they move! Call up your current utility providers for electricity, gas, water, trash, and cable/internet services to let them know you’re relocating and either no longer need their services or need to transfer services to your new home. If you’re moving cross country, be sure to call your new utility companies and get service started as soon as possible so everything is working when you get there!
Alert Financial Institutions
The last thing you need when you’re already stressed out with moving is to have your bank statements and other important financial information wind up in the wrong hands. Make sure to contact your bank, lenders, credit card companies, and any other financial institutions to let them know you’re moving—or if you use mobile financial services, update your address through your banking and finance apps!
Contact Schools
Especially if you’re moving to a new city or a neighborhood in a different school district, supply your children’s school transcripts and any other necessary paperwork right away so that attending a new school will go as smoothly as possible for your kids!
Update Medical Records
Before your move, establish which clinic or hospital will be closest to your new residence and have medical records for you and your family sent over. Taking care of this earlier can save critical time should a medical emergency arise. And don’t forget about your fur babies! Have your veterinarian transfer over your pets’ records to your new veterinary clinic as well.
Notify Government Offices
Though the process can be lengthy and sometimes frustrating, it’s important to let local, state, and federal government agencies know that you’re moving. Not only does this affect day-to-day things like driver’s licensing, car registration, and voter registration, but it’s also necessary for any services pertaining to Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, and the IRS.

Transfer Subscriptions
Do you have magazines, Amazon Prime, or subscription boxes that get delivered frequently? Don’t miss out on the products and services you’re paying for by forgetting to transfer these subscriptions to your new address. (This goes for digital subscription services that need an up-to-date billing address, too!)
