For the fourth year running, Extra Space Storage was honored by Utah Business in January at the magazine’s annual SAMY Awards ceremony. The SAMY Awards honor “Sales and Marketers of the Year” who had a demonstrable impact on their company’s bottom line and go above and beyond to communicate their vision.
The Extra Space Storage Marketing team won Best Social Media Campaign for their efforts in launching a new scholarship program. The first annual There’s Space for Everyone Scholarship, established in 2021, awarded students for using their education to promote diversity and equity in their communities. Jameson Spooner, Director of SEO & Social Media Marketing, accepted this year’s award.
“This social media campaign was extremely rewarding and had a big impact on me,” Spooner shared. “I had the opportunity to read a lot of the submissions that we received. It was humbling to see young people and their drive to have an impact on their communities.”
The 2021 There’s Space for Everyone Scholarship awarded a total of $10,000 to college students and provided the winning students with a chance to showcase the work they are doing for their communities. In addition to giving back to students, it was also an opportunity for the Extra Space Storage Marketing team to expand into a new social channel and tap into a new audience with TikTok.
“TikTok exceeded our expectations,” said Spooner. “The campaign received well over two million views and excellent engagement. It drove awareness and brought in almost 10,000 applicants. Beyond social media success, the scholarship campaign had a significant impact on website traffic by generating over 900 high-value backlinks to our site.”
At the awards ceremony in Salt Lake City, UT, Spooner thanked the leadership at Extra Space Storage for allowing his team to try new things and not be afraid to fail. One of those leaders in attendance was Senior Vice President of Marketing Dayna Hathaway.
“I’m proud of the team for launching this program and for the tremendous amount of work and partnership that happened behind the scenes to make it a success,” said Hathaway. “That effort behind the scenes, which often goes unnoticed, makes all the difference and is no doubt why the team has been honored with a SAMY Award for a fourth consecutive year.”
