Two new murals painted by local artists in Boston now enhance the exterior of an Extra Space Storage facility in Jamaica Plain, MA. Stonybrook Neighborhood Association (SNA) and SSG Development & Construction, who developed the building and funded the mural project, worked together to create the new public works of art located at 141 McBride St.
After years of planning by SNA and a five-month public call for entries, two artists were selected by a jury of community representatives and art professionals. Mike Ferrigno is a District Manager in the Boston area for Extra Space Storage and has been with the company since 2004. He was proud to represent the company and community as a juror. Proposals from Sharif Muhammad and Julia Csekö (in cooperation with Eddie Maisonet) were chosen from among the 30 total applicants and eight semifinalists. Submissions were judged based on artistic vision and significance to the community.
Two areas of the building totaling 2,500 square feet were transformed with vibrant murals designed by the artists and painted by Studio Fresh, a creative services studio in Boston specializing in hand-painted murals. Csekö’s design is located on the east side of the building in three large-framed sections, while Muhammad’s is on the multi-story northwest corner.
Muhammad’s mural, entitled Rainbow Swag, plays to his artistic purpose to represent, empower, and convey the emotions of black and brown people living in America. Csekö’s design, titled A Message to the Future, features texts (written by Maisonet) that speak of memory, community leadership, and social engagement.
SSC Development & Construction specializes in state-of-the-art self storage and mixed-use developments, and completed the Extra Space Storage McBride St property in 2018. The property features 1,155 storage units of various sizes, climate-controlled storage, and warehouse storage for oversized items. And now, it also features unique exterior art that showcases a vibrant Boston community for all to enjoy.
