At Extra Space Storage, we’re always looking to capture a great before-and-after moment. You might say it’s just part of the job in the commercial real estate world. This year, when we surpassed a major milestone of operating over 2,000 stores, we decided to take a look back at some of our favorite before-and-after moments in recent years. We’re looking forward to sharing more property upgrades in the near future, so stay tuned for more! But in the meantime, here are some of our favorites from the past few years.
201 64th St, Brooklyn, NY
Possibly one of our most unique projects in recent years was the redevelopment of a former military structure. Located in Brooklyn, NY at 201 64th St, the building was originally the Brooklyn Second Avenue divisional military arsenal. Constructed in 1926, it was used for munitions storage and a training center until the 1950s. Upgrading this fascinating property came with an unusual set of challenges. Because it was built as a literal fortress, the walls in the entire building varied between 12 and 18 inches thick.
1256 Washington St, Weymouth, MA
While wasabi green is one of our favorite colors for obvious reasons—it’s our signature color—we can accept it’s not for everyone. Back in 2018 when plans were underway for an upgrade of our property at 1256 Washington St in Weymouth, MA, local residents were vocal about there being too much green with our signature green doors lining the building. As a solution, the team added a beautiful surrounding fence with a unique design to screen all the green. On-site water conservation and other architectural elements were also worked into the plan to create a stunning property that the City of Weymouth could feel good about.
2403 Plank Rd, Fredericksburg, VA
This small but mighty facelift at 2403 Plank Rd needed to catch the eyes of Fredericksburg, VA residents as they passed by along the busy, multi-lane road. The team was tasked with updating the former dark green brand color and building out a fresh, more modern look for the self storage facility. Fredericksburg residents can take advantage of this location’s modern storage amenities like climate control and vehicle storage.
1989 Montreal Rd, Tucker, GA
It’s amazing what a little paint can do (or a lot, in this case). Our facility at 1989 Montreal Rd in Tucker, GA needed a brand update, but in addition to cosmetic changes, the project team also added a five-story section to the existing building. Overall, the expansion and remodel project added 21,731 rentable square feet to the property. For a project of this size, it’s common to have construction delays in unexpected costs. But that wasn’t the case here. Impressively, the project finished on-time and under budget!
