Frequently Asked Questions

How secure is self storage?

Extra Space Storage offers secure storage units, thanks to our storage security features. We utilize the following security measures to help protect our self storage customers and their belongings:

  • Video Surveillance: With video cameras monitoring our self storage properties, we're able to review and share reports of theft or property damage with the authorities.

  • Electronic Gate Access: Not only are most of our properties fenced in, but many also use gate and building keypads to restrict access. Each customer receives a personalized access code so that the facility manager can monitor who enters and exits the premises.

  • On-Site Resident Manager: Select Extra Space Storage locations have managers who live on the property to provide an additional layer of security.

  • Individually-Alarmed Units: Storage units with alarms will sound if anyone other than the facility manager or the customer attempts to access it with a unique code.

  • Security Access to Your Floor Only: Some of our storage locations have multiple floors where access is restricted to tenants with storage units on those levels.

Additionally, we require all self storage renters to have locks for their storage units.

What security measures should I look for in a storage facility?

When choosing a storage facility, look for strong security features such as video surveillance, personalized access codes with electronic gate entry, individually-alarmed units, and restricted access to your floor only. The facility should also have bright, reliable lighting that covers both the interior and exterior—including hallways, parking areas, and unit doors.
