Frequently Asked Questions
Am I Required to Purchase Insurance on My Storage Unit?
To rent a storage unit at Extra Space Storage, you must have an active insurance policy that covers the items you're storing. Many customers meet this requirement by choosing our Customer Protection Plan (CPP), which is designed specifically for self storage and offers several benefits:
No deductibles: You won't pay out-of-pocket costs before your coverage kicks in, making it easy and affordable to file a claim if something happens to your stored items.
Custom coverage: Coverage is tailored specifically for self storage, protecting your belongings against risks like fire, theft, and natural disasters while in storage.
Simple claims: Claims are handled directly through the CPP program, making the process quicker and easier than going through a traditional insurance provider.
You may be able to use an existing homeowners or renters insurance policy instead, but it's important to review your policy carefully. These policies often reduce or limit protection for items stored away from your home, sometimes covering only a small percentage of your total coverage amount. They may also require you to pay a deductible, exclude certain types of damage, or offer less flexible claims handling. Because coverage varies widely, you should contact your insurance provider to confirm what's included before relying on your policy for storage.
Please note that vehicle storage has separate requirements. Vehicles stored with Extra Space Storage must remain registered and insured under an active auto insurance policy. CPP does not cover vehicles parked in outdoor storage spaces, though personal property kept inside the vehicle is covered. A vehicle stored inside an enclosed storage unit can be covered by CPP up to your selected policy limit.
Always refer to your Certificate of Insurance for full coverage details and exclusions.
