When someone stays at a company for 10 years, that's impressive. For 15 years? Even more remarkable. But at Extra Space Storage, team members regularly celebrate 20 and even 25-year anniversaries. They're not staying out of loyalty alone. They're staying because their career is still growing and presenting new and unexpected opportunities.

More Than Storage, A Career Destination

Extra Space Storage may be known as the largest self storage company in the U.S., but there's something else that sets us apart. We're a company where people stay long-term and grow. As the largest publicly traded company in Utah by market cap and a member of the S&P 500, we offer the stability and resources of a major corporation combined with a culture that values every team member.

We've been recognized multiple times as a "Best Place to Work" by Forbes, Glassdoor, US News, and Newsweek. Not because of flashy perks, but because of something much more fundamental—the people who work here and the careers they're able to build.

Growing Your Career from Within

At Extra Space, career development isn't just encouraged, it's built into how we operate. We offer formal mentoring programs and structured pathways designed to help team members recognize their potential and chart their own course forward.

"I get a ton of joy and pride from working with team members here at Extra Space in helping them recognize their potential and where they can take that within the organization," says Dayna Hathaway, Chief Marketing Officer, who has been with the company for over 25 years.

The results speak for themselves. Team members regularly move between departments and advance into leadership roles across the organization. One example of many is David Wiehe, who started in the accounting department over 10 years ago and successfully transitioned to his current role as Director of Risk Management. These career pivots happen because Extra Space invests in programs that help employees grow, not just in their current roles but into entirely new areas of the business.

Leaders throughout the organization take mentorship seriously. They work closely with team members to identify strengths, explore opportunities, and create development plans that align personal goals with business needs. Whether you're looking to move up within your current department or explore something completely different, the support structure is there.

Careers Across Every Function

At Extra Space, you'll find dynamic, challenging opportunities across virtually every business function.

Store Operations: With over 4,000 locations across the U.S., there are local jobs available in almost every state. We run our storage facilities similar to retail stores, offering steady hours that typically end by 6 p.m. Many of our store managers and district managers come from retail backgrounds and appreciate the better work-life balance.

Remote Call Center Roles: Our National Solution Center is based at our Salt Lake City headquarters, but we hire remote customer service representatives across the country. These positions offer the flexibility of working from home with no cold calling. Customers reach out to us about their storage needs. There are also opportunities to advance into Team Lead and other leadership roles, some of which can be remote.

Technology and Development: While you might not naturally associate tech with self storage, Extra Space invests heavily in technology and works on modern platforms that developers appreciate. Whether you're interested in software engineering, UX design, or IT infrastructure, there are opportunities to work on meaningful projects both onsite and remote.

Corporate Functions: From marketing and data science to accounting, human resources, product management, and beyond, our corporate headquarters offers challenging roles across diverse disciplines. Headquartered in Salt Lake City at the base of the Wasatch Mountains, team members at our headquarters enjoy stunning mountain views and access to world-class outdoor activities.

What Makes Extra Space Storage Different

Career opportunities and competitive benefits matter, but they're not the whole story. Ask team members why they've stayed at Extra Space for years or even decades, and you'll hear something consistent. It's the people and the culture.

"The culture is why I'm still here," says Kate Stapleton, Senior Product Manager, who has been with the company for over 15 years. "A lot of companies have their values up on the wall, but Extra Space talks about them all the time and truly lives them. It's not just about the product we sell—it's the experience. It's about helping somebody through a time in their life where they need it."

That philosophy extends beyond how we serve customers. It shapes how we treat each other. With over 8,000 employees, our team brings company values to life through daily interactions, collaborative projects, and a genuine commitment to supporting one another's success.

The stability of our industry plays a role too. People need storage in all phases of life, whether they're downsizing, relocating, or adjusting to a growing family. That product stability translates to company stability. We grew during the Global Financial Crisis. We grew during COVID. We continue to grow today. That kind of steady growth creates consistent leadership opportunities as teams expand and new roles emerge.

We also invest in making the communities we serve better through sustainability initiatives, including solar energy projects, and encourage employees to give back through volunteer opportunities. It's part of living our values beyond business operations.

A Future That's Bright

"Our goal isn't to be the biggest. Our goal is to be the best," says Rich Keeler, Vice President of Product Engineering, who has been with the company for over 15 years. That philosophy extends to how we treat our team members and develop careers.

Whether you're looking for a store operations role close to home, a remote position with growth potential, or a corporate career in a thriving industry, Extra Space offers a path forward. As Dani Bowman, People Team Analyst, who has been with the company for over five years puts it, "If you want a long career at a company and you want somewhere where you're valued, that has a great culture, I feel like this would be a great place for you."
