At Extra Space Storage, we know our success is driven by the dedicated individuals who bring their passion and expertise to work each day. This month, we’re proud to celebrate the 25-year work anniversary of Division Vice President Matt Walker.

Matt began his self storage career with Extra Space in 2000 as an Assistant Manager in Stoughton, MA. Over the past 25 years, he has built an impressive legacy, moving through roles including Store Manager, District Team Lead, District Learning Manager, District Manager, and now Division Vice President.

“Celebrating 25 years of dedicated service, Matt’s journey with Extra Space has been nothing short of extraordinary,” shared Alex Engel, SVP of Operations. “From his early days as a Store Manager to his influential role as Division Vice President, Matt has consistently embodied our values and culture.”

Matt was first introduced to the storage industry in the 90s while working for a company that stored marketing supplies at an Extra Space property. When that company went out of business, he remembered how intrigued he had been by the self storage world. Soon after, he applied for a job at that very same property. On his first day, he cleared out three packed 10x20 units filled with old pallets, loading them into a rollaway dumpster for disposal—and thought, “This is the best job ever!” Just three months later, he opened a new site in Raynham, MA as a Store Manager—and the rest is history.

Matt’s journey has involved multiple relocations with his family, and he’s grateful for their support every step of the way. Along with those moves came valuable connections and early exposure to leadership and development programs that helped shape his career.

“I was blessed to work from the same office as team members who were leading our development initiatives,” Matt shared. “It was great to be exposed to that side of the business early on.”

During his first few years, Matt helped open many stores on the South Shore of Massachusetts, gaining hands-on experience in development, design, and construction. His time as a District Learning Manager also gave him the opportunity to work closely with Alex Engel, further influencing his leadership style and long-term career path.

“Matt has an unwavering commitment and strong moral compass that has made him a respected leader,” Alex reflected. “His decisions and judgment are truly valued and trusted. I am very fortunate to have worked alongside him. Here’s to Matt—an exceptional individual whose impact has helped shape Extra Space.”

Matt says his favorite part of the job has always been the people and the shared commitment to company values. He’s especially grateful for the individuals who supported his growth over the years.

“The past 25 years have been a journey, and the opportunity to spend most of my career with one company is a true blessing,” he said. “The countless memories I’ve made with the team over the years will always stand out. Having the opportunity to work with so many individuals from the Midwest to the Carolinas to New England has been an amazing run.”

Congratulations, Matt, on this incredible milestone!
