How did your career path lead you to Extra Space Storage?
Before joining Extra Space Storage, I led technology operations at JetBlue Airways, Starwood Hotels, Vivint, doTERRA, and, most recently, LifeVantage. Along the way, I gained experience across a variety of industries, each presenting unique opportunities and challenges. I heard about the opportunity at Extra Space Storage through Jeff Stott, who previously held this role. He encouraged me to apply, and I'm grateful he did—the position has been an exciting step in my career.
Today, I oversee the company-wide technology function. My responsibilities span all aspects of technology, including property technology, customer-facing websites and mobile apps, and core operational systems such as Breeze and Compass.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
One of the things I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to work alongside an exceptionally talented technology team with so much capability and experience. I also value the chance to interact with other leaders at our Store Support Center and in the broader field. I find the diversity and complexity of our operations both fascinating and fun.
What motivates you in your work each day?
I feel motivated by the opportunity for our team to make a meaningful impact on Extra Space Storage's operations. I enjoy partnering with business leaders to identify opportunities for technology to drive improvement, innovation, and positive change. Seeing our work translate into better experiences, greater efficiency, and stronger business outcomes is incredibly rewarding.
What is a lesson from your career that shapes how you lead?
One of the most important lessons I've learned is to assume goodwill. In a culture that values teamwork and collaboration, it's important to take the time to understand others' perspectives. As a leader, I see it as my responsibility to build alignment, foster trust, and work together to find the best path forward.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your career & how do you approach those challenges?
The rapid pace of change is one of the most challenging aspects of working in the technology field. The landscape is constantly evolving, making it essential to stay informed about emerging trends and innovations. The key is finding the right balance between embracing new technologies that create value for our company while avoiding the risks of stepping too far out onto the bleeding edge. Plus, it's important to have close collaboration between technology and business leadership to understand what's needed and what's possible. By aligning on priorities early and bringing the right perspectives together, it's easier to identify practical solutions.
What is a memorable moment or achievement in your career?
I've been part of many major technology implementations throughout my career, but the most satisfying achievements have been those shared with my team. They're not the moments marked by a celebration or a trophy, but rather the ones where everything comes together—when the team is fully aligned, working in sync, and delivering results that truly matter. It's similar to the "swing" described in The Boys in the Boat—that sense of collective flow where the work feels both effortless and deeply rewarding.
What advice would you give to future Extra Space Storage leaders?
It's always about people first. Focus on building strong relationships and working together to achieve what may initially seem impossible. When you prioritize collaboration and trust, you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
