I would strongly recommend thinking twice before storing your belongings here. On move-in day, I arrived with a rented moving truck and paid movers and found a large, decomposing rat carcass inside my storage unit. The smell was awful. Ironically, there was a tag hanging inside the unit stating that it had been cleaned to Extra Space Storage's "Extra Clean Standards" and was "Ready to Rent." I've included photos. No one was in the office and no one answered the phone. With a truck on the clock, movers waiting, and all of my belongings there, I had little choice but to remove the decomposing rat myself with a shovel, go buy bleach and cleaning supplies, and scrub and disinfect the floor before we could unload. What happened afterward bothered me almost as much as finding the rat. The site manager offered me a $35 credit. When I explained that I considered $35 insulting given what happened, the issue was escalated to the district manager. During my conversations with management, I was repeatedly told that rodents and dead rodents are something they see in the storage business and that situations like this happen. The district manager apologized for my experience and increased their offer from $35 to $40. Five dollars. I'm not expecting some enormous payout. I expected the company to recognize that handing a new customer a unit containing a decomposing rat, leaving that customer to clean it up himself, and then storing his belongings in that same facility warrants more than $40 off the next month's bill. Moving everything back out would mean renting another truck, hiring movers again, and spending another day relocating everything, so simply leaving isn't exactly a practical solution now that my belongings are already there. If management considers rodents an unfortunate but expected reality of the storage business, prospective customers deserve to know that before trusting the facility with their belongings. Look at the photos and decide for yourself whether this looks like a unit that met their "Extra Clean Standards."
