I just saw I had previously given this place a five star review, which makes it surprising that they asked me to write another one. As you can see, my opinion has become less favorable. I took off two stars because of what I can only interpret as greed. I'll explain, but first a reminder of what they do well. It's always very clean and there's no weird smell to it. I like that there's public bathroom and drinking fountains. Sounds trivial maybe, but when you could really use one or both, you're glad they're there. What might be the best part about this place, though, is the on-site staff. As long as I've been there, I've been helped almost exclusively by Ashley, and she's great. I can't see how anyone could perform better in that role. The fact that it's always her and not a different person every time is nice. She's really good at giving me reminders when I need them without ever coming across as uncaring or like dry, and she's never annoying about it. I never feel like she's overdoing it with her reminders or attempts to communicate with me. In both cases, she strikes just the right note when it comes to what I feel like is the ideal level of interaction. Here's what I don't like though, and why I'll be ending my business there hopefully in the near future: arbitrary price hikes. And by price hikes, I mean there's an extreme likelihood that out of nowhere, your monthly rate will inexplicably double. I get that this may be a common industry practice, but that's not enough to justify it. Just because most people are doing something shady doesn't mean it's ok for everyone to go ahead and do it, too.There are so many storage places in New Orleans, so it feels like they tell you one thing to get you in there, and then once they think they got you, they shake you down. I feel like even a $5 price hike warrants an explanation, but their practice is to just issue a completely different invoice from seemingly out of the blue and expect payment with no questions asked. Now, in all fairness, they are usually receptive to negotiating something. The first time, about a year or so ago, they doubled it one month but then reduced it for the following months after discussing it with me (but for that one random month I had to pay double). This time, they doubled it again, and rather than walk it back again, they changed the increase from 100% to 66%. So I'll be expected to pay this new significantly higher amount from here on out. And if I can just go off for a second, there are two things that really bother me about this practice, widespread as it may be. For one, they're banking on what they're hoping is an insurmountable amount of inconvenience as the alternative. They think, 'yeah, the customer won't like it, but I bet he'll still pay it because moving really sucks. Let's take advantage of his predicament.' Kind of a slimy way to do business, no? Then the other reason is capriciousness of it. It feels so acutely random that you're left asking 'why'? No reason is given and none is apparent, so you end up feeling like you're just the victim of arbitrary greed and cruelty. If they have a whole formula that's involved that tells them after a certain amount of time, customers become far more willing to pay a higher amount, then share that information with me. That way I can at least see it coming down the road. If it's because their insurance went up or it's due to inflation, then show me those figures and I become a much more understanding patron. And if it's because they recently decided to give Ashley the raise she deserves, then I have no problem with it at all. But as it happens currently, I don't see how anyone could be left feeling any way other than it's a matter of random greed on the part of management. So three stars feels about right. I would go back to five stars and stay here forever if it didn't feel like I may or may not be subject to corporate whims at any time. :(
