I am an AD military member who recently moved from FL to MD, requiring a downsize due to this areas cost of living. It is already a massive burden, and I’m currently in a borderline unsafe housing situation, as this is all I can afford. I rented a unit at Extra Space (7205 Oakland Mills Rd) to help manage the transition. I would have given this place 5 stars initially, as it helped me out so much. But after only TWO months, I just received a letter in the mail informing me the monthly rate has doubled from $67 to $134. While I’m sure there is a clause in the contract allowing this, it is a predatory tactic designed to trap people who have already done the hard work of moving in. Taking advantage of service members during a difficult relocation is a shameful way to do business. I cannot afford this hike and feel completely blindsided. Update: Spoke with location manager and they agreed that a 100% increase in price was way too much. They were able to get it down to higher $80s range. However due to being unable uncertainties with military, I cannot commit to a year, which means my price will never be locked in, meaning it will always increase. So still not 100% satisfied with how they operate but customer service has been great so updated stars.
