I’ve had an extremely disappointing experience with Extra Space Storage. When I first rented my unit about nine months ago, my rate was approximately $80 per month. Since then, the price has increased dramatically and is now $250 per month—more than three times what I originally paid. I called to discuss the increase and was left on hold for at least 10 minutes. I was eventually offered a temporary reduction to $175, but I was also told that the rate would likely increase back to $250—and possibly even higher—in the future. I was basically told that this is simply what storage facilities do. That explanation does not make a customer feel any better about such a drastic increase in less than a year. The customer service at this location has also been frustrating. When I need assistance from the employee I believe is named Andy, he frequently is not in the office, and I have had to wait 5–10 minutes for someone to return. On top of all of this, the elevators are rarely working. For a storage facility where customers need to move boxes, furniture, and other heavy items to and from their units, having elevators that are consistently out of service is a major inconvenience—especially while the monthly rental rates continue to increase. I understand that businesses occasionally adjust their rates, but going from approximately $80 to $250 in nine months while dealing with poor customer service and elevators that rarely work is unacceptable. This has been one of the worst experiences I’ve had with a company. I would strongly encourage anyone considering Extra Space Storage to ask specifically about their rate-increase policies and the condition of the facility before renting a unit.
