I was helping my best friend move into her storage unit this morning, and I left genuinely stunned by the way the site manager spoke to us. For context, I am 35 years old and my friend is 34. We are two grown women who were quietly unloading a trailer at 8:00 in the morning. Because the exterior door does not stay open and requires a lengthy access code every time it closes, we temporarily propped it open while moving two carts at a time from a vehicle parked literally right outside the entrance. Apparently, this is against facility policy. That’s fine. Neither of us had an issue with being corrected. A simple, “Good morning! Just so you know, for security reasons we can’t allow the door to be propped open,” would have been completely reasonable. We would have said okay, closed the door, and that would have been the end of it. That is very much not how this interaction was handled. The site manager came across the parking lot toward us and proceeded to reprimand us for several minutes. Not inform us. Not remind us. Reprimand us. Her tone, facial expressions, body language, and the sheer length of the lecture were unbelievably patronizing. She repeatedly told us that an email had been sent, that we were told not to do this, that we should know the policy, that someone could enter the building, that this was for our safety, etc. We understood the point almost immediately. She simply kept going. I cannot adequately describe how strange it felt to be 35 years old and have another adult speak to me as though I were a 14-year-old being disciplined by a teacher. What made it even more uncomfortable was that she knew my friend was the customer. When we arrived, she specifically greeted her by name and acknowledged that she was moving in that morning. I don’t rent here. I was there solely to help her move. Yet throughout this lecture, she repeatedly focused her attention on me. Apparently my facial expression eventually made it clear that I was uncomfortable with the way she was speaking to us, because she actually stopped to tell me, “I know you don’t like what I’m saying, but…” At that point I responded that I don’t even rent here, so I didn’t understand why she was directing this at me. Even that did not end the lecture. That’s the part I find most concerning. This wasn’t a rushed employee having a slightly curt moment. There were multiple opportunities to recognize that two adults understood the rule and simply end the interaction. Instead, she continued speaking down to us long after her point had been made. Enforcing a security policy is part of managing a storage facility. Humiliating or patronizing customers is not. You can enforce a rule firmly without treating adults like children. The irony is that I am currently looking for a climate-controlled storage unit in Wilmington because I may no longer have a garage when my lease ends. I was genuinely interested in this facility while helping my friend move in. After this interaction, I will absolutely be renting elsewhere. If this is the way the site manager communicates over something that could have been resolved with one courteous sentence, I would not feel comfortable dealing with her if I ever had an actual problem with my unit. The policy wasn’t the problem. The way we were treated was.

We just booked at unit with Extra Space Storage. The reservation process was easy and smooth. Once we arrived on site to unload the only problem we ran into was that the 20x10 unit actually had a wall in the middle making it 2 separate units. No biggie. Meeting and talking with Ray showed the level of care and passion that is taken regarding the property. Making personal connections with the tenants helps create a trusting environment that helps easy worry. Site checks are performed daily and owners are contacted if there is ever a problem. I feel secure about leaving our belongs here while we finish making the transition to NC!
