?????? Rising Rent, Excessive Move-Out Fees, and Poor Treatment at Extra Space Storage I was an Extra Space Storage customer for over a year, and the facility itself was decent. My problem was the company's excessive charges. My rent increased from $100 to $200 a month in one year because they wanted to raise it to “market rate.” I had to negotiate to get it lowered. Last month, I temporarily moved from one smaller unit at this location, into a bigger storage unit while moving out of my apartment. Several units at this location have locks because tenants cannot afford the fees. My lease at my apartment is up so I decided it made more sense to get a larger apartment and use one bedroom for storage rather than keep paying higher storage rates every few months. During the move, I experienced a medical emergency and learned I had an abnormal EKG, including a right bundle branch block. I was not supposed to be moving anything, but I had no other option. The only things remaining in the unit are trash, yet I am still being charged rent. I spoke with Kensel beginning Monday and explained that I had a medical emergency while moving but moved everything out anyway. I asked permission to return and remove it myself, but he said I could not access the unit without paying. The facility does not allow customers to use its dumpsters, so I was being asked to pay just to remove trash. I also requested a call from the district manager. Kensel promised someone would call, but by Friday, I had heard nothing. When I spoke with Kelly, she said I was still being charged daily rent and was 10 days behind because the remaining trash constituted a “partial move-out.” Kensel had never explained this to me. How can a customer continue being charged rent after the company knows they have moved out? Kelly also hung up on me while I was explaining my situation because another call was coming in. When I called back I spoke with Kelly who then transferred me to Emily, Emily offered no solution. She said the district manager was unavailable, and when I offered to wait until the following week for a call, she said he was never available. Customers deserve the opportunity to have their concerns addressed by management. Between frequent rent increases and excessive move-out charges, Extra Space Storage is not worth it. My experience has been extremely disappointing, particularly given my medical circumstances and how I was treated. I would rather use another storage company and would not recommend Extra Space Storage based on my experience. I am writing this review because of how I was treated and am requesting a call from the district manager.
