    Extra Space Storage was founded in 1977 by Kenneth M. Wooley. Wooley constructed the first store in Billings, MT under the name "Secure-it Mini Storage" and would later establish Extra Space Development Company in 1979. Extra Space Storage has since established its headquarters near Salt Lake City in Cottonwood Heights, UT. Today, the company operates over 4,000 storage facilities across the country.
