I don’t write reviews. This one I had to write. I rented a unit at $62 a month with autopay, which the website made sound like a locked-in rate. Big bold low price, set up autopay, done. They also listed it as a first-floor unit, which was a big reason I picked it. Then I showed up. “First floor” means at the bottom of a steep hill. Hauling anything in or out is a workout. Not easy access by any stretch. I let that one go. A couple months in, my rent doubled. They sent one email 30 days before, which I missed, and that was it. I’m fine with a small bump over time. That’s normal. Doubling it a couple months after I move in is not. I called customer service. They didn’t fix anything. They just read me the fine print. Turns out the contract lets them raise your rate up to three times the starting price in the first year. My $62 unit can legally hit $186. Yes, I should have read every line. But when the website sells you on a low rate and autopay, and the contract quietly allows tripling it, that’s not a mistake on my part. That’s the business model. Read the full contract before you sign. Ask what the max rate is in writing. Watch your inbox like a hawk. Or skip the headache and rent somewhere else. I will never use Extra Space again.
