Extra Space runs a textbook bait-and-switch: they lure you in with a month-to-month rate, bury a clause reserving the right to cancel, alter, or jack up your price on a whim, and then they actually do it. The “agreement” isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, because the only thing they’ve agreed to is keeping every option open for themselves and none for you. Two months. That is how long it took them to honor the $275/month rate I signed up for before yanking it out from under me. Their generous solution? One month to fly back from overseas, scramble to secure a vehicle capable of towing, and find a new spot at the start of summer, when availability is at its worst. An impossible deadline, by design. I managed to land a space at another Extra Space 20 miles south in Redondo Beach, and the moment I exhaled, they ran the exact same play: a 56% rent increase three months later, again with a single month’s notice. Not a typo. Fifty-six percent. I have rented storage for years from companies that lock your rate at signing and leave it alone, because that is how an honest business treats a paying customer. Extra Space is useful for exactly one thing: parking your belongings for a month or two while you pray they don’t notice you. Stay any longer and you will be handed a choice between paying a price you never agreed to, hauling everything across the county on a month’s notice, or both. This isn’t a pricing policy. It’s extortion with a corporate logo, and the only “space” they’re interested in is the one between your wallet and their hand. Take your money, your trailer, and your sanity literally anywhere else.
