When I signed up at the Itasca location on Norwood Avenue, I told the staff about my terrible experience with Public Storage. I explained that I would be out of state and needed storage for multiple years, and I was upfront about my concerns with pricing. They brought up paying through my business and locking in my price for multiple years. Before this, I had only ever paid monthly for storage. I didn’t even know paying yearly was an option. When they explained it, I understood that paying annually was how I could keep the rate locked in. I said, “Absolutely, lock me in at this price.” I arranged the rental through my business and paid the entire $276 for the year upfront, believing I was following their instructions to secure that price. Less than two weeks before my year came up they sent me a letter not an e-mail saying that my rental price was increased to $529. That is nearly a 92% increase. I feel lied to. I explained exactly how I didn’t want to get burned, trusted their explanation of a payment arrangement that was new to me, and committed to a full year. Then I got hit with almost double the price anyway. The conversation that convinced me to become a customer apparently counted for nothing when it was time to renew. If keeping that price required paying for multiple years upfront, why wasn’t that made clear while I was standing there discussing the arrangement and paying? I thought I would simply receive another yearly bill at the price we had discussed. That was my understanding when I handed over my money. When I escalated this, I got explanations about market prices and a notice they said had been mailed September 17 about the increase. That does not answer what their staff told me when I signed up. The best they would offer was what they described as a credit for one month. Public Storage, despite my terrible experience there, ultimately gave me a full year at my original rate to resolve that issue. Extra Space offered one month of credit and said that was the best they could do. I came here trying to avoid another bad experience, and I feel even worse about this one. This was all after I was in town two weeks ago, the main garage door was broken. I talked to someone who was also in there moving some stuff and they told me it had been broken for several weeks now. Being told about higher market prices while finding the main garage door in that condition made the nearly doubled annual payment even harder to stomach. I’ve since read other reviews from customers describing substantial increases after moving in. I wish I had read those before signing up. The 4.9 rating does not reflect what this experience has been like for me. I slept on this before writing, and I still feel sick to my stomach. I feel like the assurances got me in the door, but once my belongings were there, I was left paying a price I had specifically tried to protect myself against. I regret trusting what I was told. Make sure you get every pricing assurance in writing, including exactly how long it lasts and how you’re required to pay. I wish I had. But a customer should also be able to trust the explanation they’re given before handing over their money.
