New Ownership Has Significantly Reduced Access and Customer Service Quality My original contract promised 24/7 access, seven days a week. Since the new owners took over, access has been restricted to closing at 6 p.m., with the facility now closed entirely on Wednesdays and Sundays. These significant changes have made accessing my belongings much more difficult. To make matters worse, management changed the gate lock without notifying me or providing a new access code. I called at 5:30 p.m., left a voicemail, and never received a callback. As a result, I was unable to access my own storage units. I also encountered concerns about homeless individuals staying on the property, raising questions about site security and management oversight. Between reduced access hours, poor communication, and unanswered calls, the quality of service has declined considerably under the new ownership. Customers deserve clear communication, reliable access to their belongings, and professional management. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience.
We are very sorry to hear about your frustrating experience regarding facility access, communication, and security concerns at Extra Space Storage, Marianne. We aim to provide dependable access and reliable service, and we regret that your recent visits have fallen short. Please contact us at 888-STORAGE so our team can address these concerns and assist you directly.

We have concerns that even leaving a review will be met with a harsh retaliatory response. However because we feel we should share our experience with in hopes that the company will consider correcting course and /or so that others can be prepared for things we have seen go very badly since extra spaces management’s entrance into the city and hope for sincere resolution. Their actions (that we feel to be discriminatory) have caused damages for our work into the thousands over the last few weeks. Review of Extra Space Storage – West Des Moines Since Extra Space Storage took over the former 10 Federal facility, our experience has been troubling. Although our business units were paid in full, we were locked out without notice or a clear explanation and asked for additional proof of ownership. We were also accused of actions we maintain did not occur and felt we were treated differently from other customers. During a meeting, employee Hunter disputed documents the company had sent us and demanded copies. When I asked for his last name, he said he felt threatened and threatened to call police if we did not leave. After we complied, he followed us outside, accused us of harassment, and told us we were unsafe. We have recordings that we believe contradict his claims that we were rude or threatening. We also raised concerns about unequal treatment and later witnessed another customer apparently being locked out and issued a no-trespass order after becoming upset. The timing raised concerns about retaliation, though we recognize the company may have additional context. We understand that new ownership may change policies, but those policies should be applied consistently and fairly. We hope management will investigate these events, address the loss of access to paid units, and work toward a fair resolution.
We take concerns regarding unit access, fairness, and interactions with our team very seriously, and we are sorry to hear about your recent experience, Brandon. We want to ensure that every customer is treated respectfully and that policy transitions are handled clearly. Please reach out to us at 888-STORAGE so that management can look into these matters directly and assist you further.
