Beware of dramatic price increases shortly after moving in. I moved into Extra Space Storage's Crescent Street facility in March 2026 at a rate of $71 per month. In my seventh month, immediately after my six-month prepayment period ended, my rate doubled to $142. When I contacted the company to challenge this enormous increase, I was told that pricing is determined entirely by supply and demand, and that the exact same unit is now being advertised for $239 per month—as though I should consider myself fortunate that my rate had only doubled. What makes this particularly frustrating is that I had already been an Extra Space customer for two years at another location, where I prepaid for two years to secure a stable rate. When that facility changed hands and prices increased, I incurred the expense and inconvenience of moving my belongings to Crescent Street rather than leaving the company. When I moved, I specifically asked to prepay for a longer period to lock in the advertised $71 rate, but was told I could only pay six months in advance. At the first opportunity after that prepaid period ended, the company doubled my rate. Despite repeated attempts to resolve the issue by phone, in person, and through customer service, the company has refused to make any accommodation, even when I offered to pay for another full year upfront. I understand that storage prices can fluctuate with demand, but doubling an existing customer's rate within six months of moving in is an exploitative practice, particularly given the difficulty and expense of relocating stored belongings. I would strongly caution prospective customers against assuming that the advertised rate will remain remotely stable. The initial price may be attractive, but the long-term cost could be dramatically different.
