I am leaving this review because what happened here went far beyond normal customer service issues and put my child and me in a genuinely unsafe situation. 4728 Fountain Avenue, Los Angeles. On Monday, January 5, I came in during open office hours to make my payment before it was due and to access my unit. I arrived with my minor child and a small cart of essential items. We had just been evicted and were already exhausted from transporting what we could carry. We waited outside for at least 20 minutes before being let in. Once inside, the onsite manager, Jamal, refused to engage professionally. When I attempted to pay, he refused to accept my payment, put my money back on the counter, and repeatedly told me to get out. When I asked multiple times for a supervisor, district manager, or anyone above him, he refused to provide any escalation contact information and insisted he was the only manager. Jamal then started recording me without informing me he was recording. While recording, he appeared to be smiling and laughing, acting mocking and provocative rather than trying to de escalate. During the interaction, when I said my daughter witnessed what happened, he looked at my child, smirked, and said words to the effect of, “Who is going to believe her, she’s not even 10 years old.” That comment directed at a minor was shocking and completely unacceptable. There was also an incident of exposure that should never happen in a customer facing environment, especially with a child present. Both my child and I saw Jamal’s backside clearly exposed because his pants were sitting extremely low and his underwear and bare skin were visibly out. Yes, I became extremely upset after being refused payment and ordered out, and I raised my voice. I did not threaten him, I did not attempt to physically harm anyone, and I did not behave as if I would. Jamal still chose to escalate instead of simply accepting payment or providing a supervisor contact like any normal business would. The consequences of this were serious. Because I was denied access to my unit, I could not retrieve my driver’s license from my belongings. As a direct result, I was unable to rent a U Haul to move and protect our property, and my child and I ended up sleeping outside. This never should have happened. I emailed Extra Space customer service three times and also made two phone calls and left voicemails. I received only automated responses, and I was told the local store team would follow up. No one did. Then I received a past due notice anyway, despite the fact that I attempted to pay before the due date and was refused. If you are a customer who expects basic professionalism, safe conduct around children, and an ability to escalate issues beyond one onsite employee, be cautious. The lack of accountability and the way this was handled was deeply disturbing.

I had a great experience at Extra Space Storage thanks to Jose and Ed. They were both incredibly helpful, professional, and patient in answering all my questions. The facility was clean, secure, and easy to access. Jose made the paperwork quick and simple, and Ed took the time to explain everything clearly.
