Worst Customer Experience - Extortion Fees Title: They Refuse Payment Unless You Pay to NOT Leave My 19 year old daughter missed 2 payments on her storage unit. I called immediately and offered to pay the full balance + all late fees to bring the account current. Extra Space Storage refused to take my payment unless we ALSO paid an additional $100 "vacate fee". When I asked why we would pay a vacate fee if we are NOT vacating and want to keep the unit, they said: _"There is nothing we can do."_ That’s a lie. There IS something they can do. They just don’t want to. Inside the unit is my daughter’s clothes, couch, and table from her apartment. Essential stuff for a 19 year old just starting out. Instead of working with us, they would rather auction off her belongings and send the remaining balance to collections. Even though I was standing there trying to pay it in full. Even though I asked them to remove the $100 fee since we are not leaving. If you fall behind even a little, they will screw you 100%. They do not care about getting paid. They care about fees and auctioning units. Do NOT store anything important here. Go to a company that will actually let you pay your bill. UPDATE: message tells me to call and they say this is a automated message. Why tell me to call just to have me talk to someone who says nothing different!
