I’ve been a long-term tenant at Extra Space Storage in Spicewood and had fully expected to stay for another 10+ years. Unfortunately, the constant rate increases have finally pushed me to move out. The low move-in rate may look attractive, but in my experience, once you’re settled in, the increases keep coming every few months. At this point, my storage unit is approaching $4,000 a year, and I simply can’t justify it anymore. What makes this especially disappointing is that I primarily use the unit to store our Halloween decorations. Our home has become known in the neighborhood for Halloween, and we typically get 2,000–3,000 visitors every year. Because of the latest increase, last year ended up being our final year doing it on that scale. It’s unfortunate that repeated storage rate increases played a part in ending something our family and neighborhood enjoyed so much. I posted about my experience on our neighborhood page and was surprised by how many other people said they’ve experienced the same thing: reasonable rates at first, followed by repeated increases after moving in. I understand that businesses occasionally need to adjust pricing, but there is a big difference between an occasional increase and a pattern of increases that makes long-term customers feel like loyalty means very little. I’m glad to see additional storage facilities being built nearby, because more competition is badly needed. Hopefully that competition encourages Extra Space Storage to reconsider how it treats long-term tenants. After years of being a loyal customer, I’m disappointed to be leaving, but the pricing has simply become unsustainable.
