I originally left Extra Space Storage a 5-star review because, at the beginning, the staff was friendly and asked us to leave one. Unfortunately, our experience changed completely, and I can no longer recommend this company. My wife and I rented four units (two 10x15s, one 10x20, and one 10x30) while operating a resale business and trying to rebuild our lives. Those units contained our business inventory, over $200,000 in tools alone, family heirlooms, irreplaceable photographs, artwork, statues (one worth almost $8k by itself) birth certificates, medical records, legal documents, Social Security records, clothing, tons of expensive electronics, amd collectibles, amd so much more, as well as our own belongings collected over a lifetime. For months, we spent countless hours organizing our units, removing items, and selling them online and at flea markets so we could stay caught up on our bills. Then we were repeatedly told we could no longer place items outside our units while we worked, even though we observed other tenants doing the same thing without being stopped. During this time, a man who identified himself as corporate entered one of our units and looked over all our belongings while I was working in the 20ft unit. After that, the scrutiny from staff noticeably increased, and we felt like we were constantly being watched whenever we were there. When we fell behind, we offered $1,500 in cash toward our balance in an effort to save our property, but that offer was refused. Our units were later auctioned. We were not notified of the auction date and time, told theyd be separate auctions when in fact we found out that they were all sold ar one auction to we believe 2 to 3 "regular auction buyer's! We did not receive proper notice of the auction date or sufficient opportunity to prevent the sale. In the end, four units containing what we believe was well over $500,000 worth of business inventory and personal property sold for less than $1,000 in total. The loss of those units destroyed our business, contributed to the loss of our 2022 Kia, our apartment, and eventually left us living in our vehicle. The emotional impact of losing irreplaceable family memories and important personal records cannot be measured. Since then, I have repeatedly requested copies of my rental agreements, account records, lien notices, auction documentation, and related records. As of today, I have not received the records I requested. This review reflects my personal experience. If you have experienced similar issues with this company, keep copies of every document, email, payment receipt, and photograph, and document every interaction. Those records may become very important. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Extra Space Storage!
