How Do I File an Insurance Claim?

To file an insurance claim, you'll need to notify the storage facility manager, review your insurance policy, and take steps to gather and locate all necessary documentation.

Step 1: Notify the Storage Facility Manager

  • Contact the Storage Facility: Notify your storage facility's management immediately about the damage.

  • Take Photos: Take clear color photos or videos of your storage unit (including the storage unit #) and of all your damaged property. If applicable, photograph any signs of forced entry into your unit to include when you file a claim.

  • When to File a Police Report: If forced entry or burglary is suspected, contact local police and obtain a police report.

Step 2: Document the Loss

  • Create an Itemized Inventory: Make a detailed list of all the damaged items. For each item, include a description, its approximate value, and, if possible, the date of your initial purchase.

  • Find Proof of Ownership: Gather any supporting documents you have for the stolen items, including:

    • Original receipts or invoices

    • Bank or credit card statements showing the purchases

    • Prior photos of the items in the unit or elsewhere

Step 3: Review Your Insurance Policy

Review your insurance policy to determine the coverage parameters, noting any time limits on submitting a claim after discovering the damage. Coverage for belongings in a storage unit typically comes from one of two sources:

  • Customer Protection Plan: If you purchased a Customer Protection Plan when renting a unit from Extra Space Storage, review the terms and coverage limit of your plan.

  • Homeowners/Renters Insurance: Your personal property coverage may extend to items stored off-premises up to a specific limit. Review your policy to see your coverage limit and deductible. Contact your insurance provider directly to file a claim.

Step 4: Submitting a Customer Protection Plan Claim

If you purchased a Customer Protection Plan when renting a unit from Extra Space Storage, visit www.cppclaims.com to file your claim. You will need your unit number and the photos you took to submit online. You will also have access to a Content Inventory Form to help itemize any damaged or missing property.
