In February 2026, New York City sued Extra Space Storage, alleging that the company attracted customers with low advertised rates and then dramatically increased those rates once customers had moved their belongings in. On July 9, 2026, NYC announced a $1.7 million settlement, including: $1 million in restitution for affected customers. More than $700,000 in civil penalties. Requirements intended to prevent deceptive pricing, inadequate notice, and other abusive practices. The city's allegations included sudden, substantial rent increases after move-in, even where customers had been promised advance notice. They raised my rate close to $100 after less than 6 months. Obviously they haven’t had enough complaints filed with the North Carolina Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division citing North Carolina's Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act. They might respond on here “well that’s the contract you signed”. So pay attention to their response and watch how they try to tap dance around not outright saying “yeah well of course we give you misleading initial pricing then keep jacking the price up because it’s hard to leave.” See how they lie by omission in their response. And obviously it’s a sham to say “we raise the rates to provide you with this amazing facility.” It’s a cheap metal building with one guy occasionally working there. If your overhead requires 30-50-100% increases every few months then you really seriously messed up your calculations on how to run an empty building not meant for habitation. At least be honest about the reality of your business practices for the readers. Obviously I’d avoid this company like the plague from now on.
