**DO NOT STORE VALUABLES AT THIS EXTRA SPACE STORAGE LOCATION. My unit was burglarized through the roof, my lock was untouched, and my $10,000 insurance claim was denied.** My storage unit at Extra Space Storage, 6509 S 1st St in Austin, Unit 271, was burglarized and approximately $17,000 in tools and equipment** were stolen. I had been at my unit on December 19 and noticed a 27-foot moving truck driving slowly through the facility with three people, including a woman walking behind the truck. At the time I thought she might have been helping guide the truck, but after discovering the burglary, I believe this may have been connected to what happened. I later returned on January 1 and discovered my unit had been burglarized. My lock was untouched. After looking closer, I saw visible roof damage above/near my unit and adjacent units, including bent and lifted roof metal. I also found a pair of vice grips near the top of the interior wall/structure between my unit and the adjacent unit. The facility manager acknowledged by text that this represented a structural breach and that the area was not adequately secured**. When I asked about camera footage for the relevant date range, I was told the system/access was down and they did not have access to the footage. They did not confirm whether footage existed or could be recovered/exported. Extra Space later reinforced the roof area with additional screws/fasteners. I purchased the insurance offered through Extra Space Storage, which showed $10,000 in coverage, but the claim was denied as “mysterious disappearance / no forcible entry.” I dispute that completely. My unit was locked, my lock was untouched, and the roof/roofline showed visible evidence of tampering. I was also told the Extra Space district manager reported to the insurance administrator that I caused the roof damage, which I dispute. The video I sent was taken only to document and demonstrate the existing roof condition after the facility told me they did not see evidence of roof entry. I reached out to Extra Space corporate/customer service multiple times asking for evidence preservation, camera/footage information, roof repair records, and liability claim information. I did not receive a response. Separately, my move-in rate was $114.36 in October 2024. It increased to $216 in 2025 and then to $270 by January 2026. Based on my experience, this location and the related claims process did not handle a serious security issue with transparency, accountability, or customer focus. I have photos documenting the roof condition, manager acknowledgment, vice grips, claim denial, and later roof reinforcement. Review carefully before storing anything valuable here.
