What's the Difference Between Covered, Uncovered, & Enclosed RV Storage?

Covered, uncovered, and enclosed RV storage each offer different levels of protection for your recreational vehicle. Covered vehicle storage is an open-air parking spot with a roof overhead to protect your RV from rain and sun exposure. Uncovered parking does not have a roof, but this parking space is the most cost-effective of these RV parking types. Enclosed or indoor RV storage is a fully walled, garage-like bay that protects from the elements and increases security for your vehicle.

Uncovered RV Storage

Uncovered parking is the most affordable storage option for RVs. It doesn't offer protection from weather and sun. However, it still provides a place to park your recreational vehicle for short or long-term storage, often including facility security features, such as video surveillance, electronic gate access, and more. And because there's no roof clearance to worry about, uncovered RV parking typically accommodates tall rigs, like fifth wheels and Class A coaches. Depending on your location, uncovered RV storage can be more widely available than covered or enclosed parking, which are often in high demand. Many Extra Space Storage facilities across the nation offer uncovered RV parking spaces starting at 8x20 and ranging up to 50 feet in length.

Covered RV Storage

Compared to uncovered parking, covered RV storage provides more protection from rain, snow, hail, high winds, and sun exposure that can cause exterior paint to fade or peel. This type of vehicle storage can be used for short or long-term storage and also helps keep your RV cleaner by shielding it from precipitation and dust. Due to the extra protections covered RV storage provides, it costs a little more than uncovered RV storage, but less than indoor vehicle storage. Like uncovered RV storage, covered parking can accommodate a variety of larger recreational vehicles like motorhomes, campers, and trailers up to 50 feet in length at certain locations.

Indoor RV Storage

At Extra Space Storage, indoor RV storage units are enclosed, garage-like spaces that can protect from the elements, as well as provide increased security compared to covered and uncovered RV storage. They usually range in size from 10x20 to 10x40. Select facilities may even offer climate-controlled storage options for your RV. Enclosed RV storage costs the most of the three RV storage types—depending on your location and the time of year, demand may be high, so try to reserve your indoor RV storage spot well in advance.
