Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Need My Own Lock When Renting a Storage Unit?
Yes, you're responsible for supplying your own lock when renting a storage unit with Extra Space Storage. You can bring a storage unit lock with you, or purchase a cylinder lock or disc lock at the storage facility.
What Type Of Lock Should I Buy for My Storage Unit?
Extra Space Storage recommends using a disc lock or a cylinder lock to secure your storage unit. These types of locks provide more security than other lock types.
Disc lock: A circular padlock designed for maximum security. The round shape makes it difficult for thieves to cut or tamper with it because the shackle is hidden inside the lock body.
Cylinder lock: An integrated lock designed to fit inside the storage unit door's latch or locking mechanism. Unlike a padlock that hangs on the outside, a cylinder lock sits flush with the latch, making it harder to pick or cut.
You can purchase cylinder locks or disc locks at our facilities, or bring your own. Some facilities have specific lock requirements, so make sure to check with your preferred location before making a purchase.
