Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Open a Storage Unit Lock?
If you're renting with Extra Space Storage, you'll use either a disc lock or a cylinder lock for your storage unit. Disc and cylinder locks are opened the same way by:
Inserting your provided key into the lock and turning clockwise to unlock
Removing the lock from the latch
Sliding or lifting the door mechanism
Pulling up the storage unit door
Select Extra Space Storage facilities may offer digital codes to open your unit doors, where you can insert a personal PIN via the Extra Space Storage app. Contact your local facility or our call center to learn more!
Should I Use a Cylinder or Disc Lock for a Storage Unit?
Both disc locks and cylinder locks are highly secure options for storage units. Disc locks are the most common choice for renters since their round shape makes them tough to break and easy to purchase at most storage facilities. Cylinder locks are often installed by the facility and fit directly into the unit’s door latch, making them difficult to tamper with. Either option provides strong protection, though disc locks are generally the standard if you’re bringing your own.
How to Open a Disc Lock Without a Key
If you have lost or forgotten the key for your lock or you find that the lock is broken on your storage unit, we recommend that you contact the storage facility manager immediately. They will be able to assist you in removing or replacing the lock. For security reasons, tenants aren’t able to cut or break their own locks. Facility managers have special tools to safely remove them without damaging the unit.
How to Lock a Storage Unit
To securely lock a storage unit, begin by making sure the door is fully closed—if it's a roll-up door, you may need to press down with your foot to ensure the bottom is sealed. Next, slide the latch across to lock the door in place, and give it a firm tug to confirm it's secure. Finally, insert your lock, like a disc lock, through the latch, lock it, and don’t forget to take your key with you. Tug on your storage unit door to make sure it is secure. If your storage facility offers digital access, you can lock and unlock your storage unit easily with the Extra Space Storage app. You should be able to open the app and click a button to get into your storage facility and storage unit!
