Frequently Asked Questions

Can you store a car in a storage unit?

You can store a car in a storage unit at Extra Space Storage facilities where indoor vehicle storage is allowed. We offer car storage options at many of our self storage locations across the country.

Drive-up storage units that are designated for vehicle storage use at our facilities provide secure indoor storage options for cars. In most cases, cars can fit in 10x20 storage units and larger. However, the storage unit size you'll need for auto storage depends on the dimensions of your vehicle. Use our Vehicle Storage Size Estimator tool to get an idea of how much space you need!

Extra Space Storage also has guidelines you must follow when renting car storage, such as:

  • All vehicles placed in storage must have their wheels in proper working condition.

  • Vehicles must be driven into the storage unit, not towed or stored on blocks.

  • Vehicles must have current registration and proof of insurance.

  • If any tags expire during storage, they should be renewed.

  • Tires must be inflated and inspected for signs of dry rot.

  • Drain as much gasoline as possible from the fuel tank.

  • No major maintenance or repairs are allowed inside the storage unit.
