Preparing for a move but haven't packed your shoe collection yet? While you might be tempted to throw your shoes into a bag at the last minute, this can cause them to get scuffed, creased, or crushed during transit. Whether you're relocating across town or moving cross-country, using the right packing approach is key to keeping your shoes in top condition. Here's how to pack shoes for a move the right way!

Step 1: Gather Your Packing Supplies

Before you start, make sure you have all the materials you need in order to pack with ease and protect your shoes. Here are some essential packing supplies:

  • Original shoe boxes and/or several small-to-medium

    moving boxes

  • Permanent markers or labels

  • Cleaning supplies (e.g., brushes or microfiber cloths, mild soap, leather conditioner, etc.)

  • Packing tape

  • Bubble wrap

  • Packing paper

  • Optional: Acid-free tissue paper, clean socks, or shoe trees (for stuffing)

  • Optional: Silica gel packets or shoe deodorizers

Step 2: Declutter & Sort Your Shoe Collection

Decluttering before packing will help you avoid bringing excess along and make it easier to keep your closet organized in your new home. Start by gathering all your shoes in one place to evaluate whether there are any pairs you no longer need or wear. Consider donating any shoes that are still in good condition, and discard pairs that are beyond repair. Then, gather all the shoes you're keeping, and sort them into piles—keeping pairs together and grouping by shoe type. You can also further separate by season if you'd like. It's best to set aside any delicate or high-value shoes that will require extra care during packing. And don't forget to keep the pair you'll wear on moving day separate!

Step 3: Consider Temporary Shoe Storage

Don't want to part ways with any of your shoes, but not sure they'll all fit in your new home? Whether you're downsizing and no longer have room for your entire shoe collection or you'd simply like some extra space while you move in, renting temporary self storage can be a great solution. It can also allow you to keep seasonal footwear—like winter boots or summer sandals—organized and easy to access when the weather changes. Not to mention, climate-controlled storage is ideal for delicate or designer shoes, helping to protect leather, suede, and other high-end materials from extreme temperatures and humidity.

Step 4: Clean Your Shoes

Packing dirty shoes can lead to odors, stains, and even mold, so one of the best tips for moving shoes is to give each pair a thorough cleaning beforehand. Remove shoelaces and insoles, then give them a refresh with a warm water and soap mixture. Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any dirt from the shoe's surface, then finish with a damp cloth or gentle cleaning solution—just be sure to research appropriate cleansers for different shoes. Let each pair air dry completely before packing to prevent moisture damage, then top off with a silica gel packet or shoe deodorizer if desired.

Step 5: Stuff Your Shoes to Maintain Their Shape

When packing shoes to move, stuffing them preserves their form during transit and prevents creases or collapsing. This step is especially important for structured, leather, or designer shoes. If you don't have shoe trees available, use acid-free tissue paper, packing paper, or clean socks to gently fill the toes and midsection of your shoes. Avoid using newspaper, as the ink can transfer onto the material. For tall boots, be sure to also stuff the shafts so they stand upright.

Step 6: Wrap & Pack Your Shoes Properly

The best way to pack shoes when moving depends on whether you still have the original boxes. If you do, wrap each shoe individually, place them inside their designated box, fill any gaps with padding, and carefully stack shoe boxes inside a larger moving box—heaviest at the bottom. If you don't have the original boxes, here's how to properly pack shoes for a move:

  • Choose the Right Size Box: Small-to-medium boxes work best—large boxes can become too heavy and result in shifting or damage.

  • Line Your Boxes: Add a layer of crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap at the bottom of each box for extra cushioning.

  • Wrap Each Shoe Individually: Use packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap your shoes and prevent scuffs—being extra careful with high heels and other delicate shoes.

  • Put Heavier Shoes on the Bottom: Keeping pairs together, place bulkier shoes like boots and sneakers at the bottom of each box. Stack lighter pairs like flats or sandals on top.

  • Position Shoes Heel-to-Toe or Sole-to-Sole: Strategically placing your shoes helps maximize space and maintain balance within each box.

  • Keep Delicate or High-Value Shoes Separate: Use a separate box to pack high heels, dress shoes, and other valuable shoes—this will help prevent them from getting damaged by bulkier shoes.

  • Fill Empty Space: To prevent shifting, fill any gaps with socks, bubble wrap, or packing paper. Inserting a layer of padding between each pair gives them extra protection.

  • Seal & Label: Secure each box with packing tape, then label it clearly with the contents, season, and any handling instructions.

Step 7: Unpack & Organize Your Shoes

After arriving at your destination, try to unpack your shoes as soon as possible. Take them out of their boxes one by one, removing any padding or stuffing and ensuring they're not damaged before placing them where they belong. Designate specific spots for different shoes—keeping them organized by type or season—to make your new closet more functional. You might also want to set up shoe racks, or utilize clear bins or under-bed storage to effectively store a large collection.
